THE WEDDING RING LOST TO THE SEA AND OTHER STORIES

A man shook hands with the sea,
one organism to another, present and passing.
You could see him a mile off
snorkelling like a whale with his spouting
mammal children. It was piss-easy for the sea
to help herself to his silver with a fine thread of gold
ring from a jeweller in Kingsland
the finger
thinned lately from work and sunlight
and turn away humming, merely (la mer!)
going about her business, as if
the ring were her pet stripey
